River History

The history of our nation's westward expansion was written along the banks of its rivers. There are endless tales of adventure, struggle, and tragedy filled with fascinating characters ranging from the heroic to the nefarious. This nation was shaped and defined by these arteries. Paddlewheel steamboats were the first mechanized travel and revolutionized transportation and the economy and culture of the nation. Their stories are the stuff of legend.

About Me

My name is Bill Wiemuth and for more than a decade, I was blessed to work aboard riverboats plying the rivers of the United States. As a River Historian I have become increasingly fascinated with the drama of the events that have occured along these rivers. My work took me aboard the American Queen, Mississippi Queen, and Delta Queen traveling along the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers; aboard the Columbia Queen, Queen of the West, and Empress of the North along the Willamette, Columbia and Snake Rivers of the Pacific Northwest, and aboard the Empress of the North along Alaska's incredible Inside Passage. 
    I also was honored to serve as an onboard presenter and the coordinator for the Delta Queen's farewell cruising season in 2008. In addition to an array of onboard commemorative events, activities, shows, and presenters, my wife Laura Sable and I also planned and hosted 27 events (one for each port of call) to celebrate the boat's career with the cities, citizens, and media along the river. As the media contacts onboard, we shared the boat's story with many individuals, groups and print and broadcast media including appearances on CNN’s Headline News, ABC’s Good Morning, America, and on National Public Radio.    I continue to study, write and give presentations for groups all across the country.

My other love is entertaining. My wife, Laura Sable, and I have written and performed several mainstage shows for theatres and for Princess, Holland America Line, Delta Queen Steamboat Company, and Majestic America Line.
